Acne
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting almost everyone at some point in their lives. At Golden State Dermatology, our skincare professionals understand the impact acne can have on your self-esteem and confidence.
Our experienced dermatologists are dedicated to treating this condition effectively, helping you look and feel better while preventing potential scarring.
What Is Acne?
Acne first appears as hormones that stimulate oil glands to produce excess oil. This leads to clogged pores and the development of blackheads and whiteheads.
As oil continues to be produced beneath blocked pores, bacteria convert it into free fatty acids. This process can cause inflammation, resulting in red bumps, pimples, and nodules.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is a complex skin condition that typically begins around puberty and can continue through the teenage years and sometimes even into adulthood. It can be caused by several factors, including family history, stress, and certain medications.
However, hormones are the most common trigger. As hormones stimulate oil glands to produce more oil, pores become clogged, leading to the development of blackheads and whiteheads.
Oil accumulates beneath the blocked pore, where bacteria convert it into free fatty acids. This buildup increases pressure inside the pore, which can cause the pore lining to break open beneath the skin.
The released oil and bacteria cause inflammation, resulting in pimples or red bumps. For adult acne sufferers, especially women, hormonal fluctuations related to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or other hormonal changes can contribute to breakouts.
Environmental factors, skincare habits, and diet may also play a role. Your dermatologist will consider all these factors when developing personalized treatment plans.
More effective and long-lasting results are possible by addressing the root causes of acne. At Golden State Dermatology, our experts are dedicated to helping you achieve clearer skin and renewed confidence.

Acne Treatment Options
At Golden State Dermatology, the dermatologists offer a range of treatments tailored to each person’s needs. These treatments are also adaptable and can change based on your skin’s response throughout the course of treatment.
Topical Treatments and Personalized Skincare Regimens
At Golden State Dermatology, there is a range of topical treatments that are part of our comprehensive approach to managing acne. These treatments include many different prescription medications and advanced skincare solutions designed to address different causes of acne.
Some work to unclog pores and reduce inflammation, while others focus on controlling acne-causing bacteria or gently exfoliating the skin to prevent pore blockages. Your dermatologist will emphasize the importance of a consistent skincare routine in managing acne, often recommending specialized cleansers, toners, and moisturizers that complement the prescribed treatments.
These products are formulated to support your skin’s health without causing further irritation or breakouts. Your dermatologist at Golden State Dermatology will work with you to develop a customized skincare routine using medical-grade products suited to your skin type and acne severity.
Oral Medications
For some people, topical treatments alone may not be enough to manage their acne effectively. In these cases, dermatologists may recommend oral medications as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
These medications can include different types of prescription pills that work from the inside out to combat acne. Some oral treatments focus on reducing inflammation and controlling bacteria throughout the body, which can significantly impact skin health.
For severe or resistant cases of acne, we may prescribe more potent medications that work to dramatically reduce oil production and help prevent clogged pores.
In-Office Procedures
The dermatologists at Golden State Dermatology offer a variety of in-office procedures to complement topical and oral acne treatments. These procedures are designed to provide more immediate results and can be particularly effective for stubborn acne cases.
Some treatment options include chemical peels that exfoliate the skin and improve its texture, as well as extractions to remove persistent blackheads and whiteheads. We also use various laser and light therapies that can reduce inflammation and bacteria in the skin.
Acne Scar Treatment
Acne scars can be a lasting reminder of past breakouts, but at Golden State Dermatology, there are several effective treatments to reduce their appearance. Dermatologists use a comprehensive approach to acne scar treatment, which includes a variety of options tailored to each patient’s specific needs.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This process stimulates collagen production, which helps improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of acne scars.
The treatment is effective for various scar types and can be combined with topical treatments for enhanced results.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels, ranging from superficial to deep, are another effective option to enhance skin texture and diminish discoloration. These treatments use carefully formulated solutions to remove damaged outer layers of skin, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath.
Different strengths of peels can be used to target varying depths of scarring.
Laser Treatments
We utilize advanced laser treatments, such as laser resurfacing, for overall skin texture improvement and red or raised scars. Fraxel laser treatment is particularly effective for acne scars, using fractional technology to target specific areas while leaving surrounding tissue intact.
This approach promotes faster healing and can significantly improve the appearance of acne scars with minimal downtime. Your experienced dermatologist at Golden State Dermatology will thoroughly assess your skin and recommend the most appropriate treatment or combination of treatments for your specific type of acne scarring.
It’s important to note that multiple sessions may be required to achieve optimal results, as acne scar treatment often involves a gradual improvement process.
TCA CROSS Treatment for Deep Acne Scars
For patients with the most severe and challenging to treat acne scars, we offer TCA CROSS (Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars) treatment. This innovative procedure is particularly effective for deep, pitted scars that are present in many acne scar cases.
TCA CROSS is an outpatient procedure that involves applying a high-concentration trichloroacetic acid (TCA) solution directly to the base of the scars. This targeted application causes a controlled inflammatory reaction, which stimulates the formation of new collagen fibers.
The goal is to improve scar appearance by increasing collagen production and reducing the shadows cast by scar depressions. Most patients require three to six TCA CROSS treatments for the most improvement, with sessions spaced two to eight weeks apart over six months.
